SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (10 marks)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Write in your own words as far as possible.
Erosion.
Erosion is the process by which weathered sediment is carried away. Rock material can be moved by streams and rivers, waves, glacial ice or wind. The number of fragments that are moved and the distance that they travel are affected by factors such as the size and mass of the particles and the speed at which the eroding agent is moving. Erosion affects the landscapes of all the regions of the world.
Soils are just a tiny fraction of all earth materials, yet they are a vital resource. Because spoils are necessary for the growth of rooted plants, they are the foundation of the human life-support system. However, soils are among our most abused resources. The loss of fertile topsoil is a growing problem as human activities disturb more of earth surface. Soil erosion is a natural part of the constant recycling of earth materials known as the rock cycle. Water, wind and other agents move soil from one place to another. Every time it rains, raindrops strike the soil surface. Water flowing across the surface then carries away the dislodged particles. Because thin sheets of water move the soil particles, this process is called erosion.
After flowing as a thin sheet for a short distance, the water forms tiny streams called rills. As more water enters the rills, they erode the soil further, erasing trenches known as gullies. Although most dislodged soil particles do not move far during each rainfall, large quantities eventually make their way downslope to a stream. The stream transports these soil particles, which are now called sediments, and eventually deposits them in the plains.
In the past, the soil eroded more slowly than it does today because more land was covered by trees, grasses, and other plants. Unfortunately, human activities that remove natural vegetation, such as farming, logging, and construction, have greatly accelerated erosion. Without plants, soil is more easily carried away by wind and water. Scientists can estimate the rate of erosion due to water by measuring the amount of sediments in rivers. These estimates indicate that before humans appeared, rivers carried about 9 million kg of sediments to the oceans each year. In contrast, the amount of sediments currently transported to the seas by rivers is about 24 trillion per year.
Wind generally erodes soil much more than water does. During a prolonged drought, however, strong winds can remove large quantities of soil from unprotected fields. That’s exactly what happened during the 1930’s in the part of the Great Plains that came to be known as the Dust Bowl. The rate of soil erosion depends on soil characteristics and factors such as climate, slope, and type of vegetation. In many regions, including about one-third of the world’s croplands, soil is eroding faster than it is being formed. This results in lower productivity, poorer crop quality, and threatened world food supply.
Another problem caused by excessive soil erosion is the deposition of sediment. Rivers that accumulate sediment must be dredged to remain open for shipping. As sediment settles in reservoirs, they become less useful for storing water, controlling floods, and generating electricity. Some sediment are contaminated with agricultural pesticides. When these chemicals enter a river or lake, they endanger organisms that live in or use the water, including humans. Sediments also contain soil nutrients, which come from natural processes and from added fertilizers. Excessive nutrient levels in lakes stimulate the growth of algae and plants. This can accelerate a process that eventually leads to the death of the lake.
Although we cannot completely eliminate soil erosion, we can significantly slow it by using soil conservation measures. A misunderstanding of the composition of the rainforest soil can lead to the destruction of millions of acres of it and what will be left will be severely leached, unproductive land. Conservation measures include steps taken to preserve environments and protect the land. These measures include planting rows of the rows of trees called windbreaks, terracing hillsides, ploughing along the contours of hills, and rotating crops. Preserving fertile soil is essential to feeding the world’s rapidly growing population.

SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION (10 marks)
Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Write in your own words as far as possible.
Each piece of clothing sold as a care label, which lists recommended cleaning methods for the clothing. For a sweater, the instructions might tell you to wash using the washing machine and then dry at low temperature. They might also advise you to simply wash the sweater using your hands in cold water and lay the sweater flat to dry. “Dry Clean Only”.
Why is it necessary to put care instructions on label? The same cleaning method would not work for all materials. For example, a shirt made from 100 percent cotton may need to be ironed after washing, but a shirt made from cotton and polyester blend may come out of the dryer wrinkled free. A wool jacket often needs to be dry cleaned because wool can shrink when washed in water.
The tendency to wrinkle when washed is the property of cotton. The tendency not wrinkle is the property of polyester. The tendency to shrink when washed is a property of wool. Cotton, wool, and polyester have different properties because they have different compositions. The word “composition” means putting together or the combining of parts into whole. Materials can be divided into pure substances and mixtures based on their composition.
Matter that always has exactly the same composition is classified as a pure substance, or simply a substance. Table salt and table sugar are classified under pure substances because they have exactly the same composition since every sample of a given substance has the same properties because a substance has a fixed, uniform composition. The substances are further classified under two categories-elements and compounds.
Although there are millions of known substances, there are only 100 elements. An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into simpler pieces because it contains only one type of atom. At room temperature, some elements are solids, gases or liquids. Examples of elements are: aluminium, cabon, oxygen, nitrogen, bromine and mercury.
Water is composed of the elements: hydrogen and oxygen. When electricity passes through water, bubbles of oxygen and hydrogen gas form and rise to the surface of the water. If the gases are collected intonancontainer and a flame is brought near the mixture, the hydrogen and oxygen react and form water.
Water is classified as a compound because it is a substance made from two or more simpler substances and can be broken down into those simpler substances at either elemnts or other compounds. A compound always contains two or more elements joined in a fixed proportion.
The properties of a compound differ from those of the substances from which it is made. For example, oxygen and hydrogen are gases at room temperature but water is liquid. Hydrogen can fuel a fire, and oxygen can keep a fire burning, but water does not burn or help other substances to burn. Water is one of the substances commonly used to put out fire. What a paradox…

SECTION C: COMPREHENSION (10 marks)
Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
Many tourists I have met told me that one place they have to go to is the weekend market. This market is huge and has everything from bags, souvenirs and handicrafts to many kinds of animals and plants. It also has a fantastic variety of local food. In other words, the weekend market is a great place for shopping and experiencing the local culture.
The market is located near the city’s main bus station; so people come from all over the country to buy and sell goods. Moreover, it is also near a train station and a bus station which makes it very convenient for city people, especially young people who don’t have cars. The market is very large and full of hundreds of small shops and stalls. Consequently, it can be confusing to get around. However, if you get lost, it is a good idea to look for the clock tower which is right in the middle of the market. It will help you find your way.
When I walk into the market early on a Sunday morning, there are people and cars and motorcycles everywhere. You have to be careful where you walk.
Many people are bringing their goods to sell in big bags on carts and trolleys. In fact, you might even have to jump out of the sellers’ way as they charge along the narrow walkways with their goods. In addition to the sellers, tourists and locals are pouring in looking for something to eat or ready to start shopping. As time goes by, the market gets more and more crowded and you have to start squeezing past people to keep moving. To sum up, a day at the weekend market is both a day of shopping and a unique experience for your senses. It is a kind of magical journey that is great as a first experience for tourists and an escape from daily life for locals. Moreover, while it is usually hot and crowded, the atmosphere is friendly and good-natured. As you walk through the market, you will experience many sensations. For example, there are many smells, scents and aromas. One moment you will be smelling the aromas of stir-fried dishes from a small restaurant and the next you will smell the scents of orchids and other flowers as you pass through the cooler and more relaxing garden section. Furthermore, walking deeper into the market, your eyes will
have trouble recording so many products with their many colours, designs and sizes. After a while you may feel dizzy and look for a quiet place to have a rest and refreshing drink. Fortunately, there are many small cafes and drink stalls selling fresh coconut juice, orange juice or iced water.

Online learning in the nearest and most popular form of distance education today. Within the past decades, it has had a major impact on post-secondary education and the trend is increasing. Online learning is education that takes place over internet. It is often referred to “e learning” among other terms. However, online learning is just one of “distance learning”, the umbrella term for any learning that takes place across distance and not in traditional classroom. Distance learning has a long history and there are several types available today: correspondence courses (conducted through regular mail with little interactions), CD-ROM courses (where the student interacts with static computer content). Tele courses (where is delivered via radio or television broadcast), online learning (internet based courses offered synchronously and / or asynchronously), and mobile learning (by means of devices such as cellular phones and digital audio players).
Online distance learning is an instructional system which connects learners with educational resources. Students work on their own at home, at work, or at school and communicate with faculty and other students via e-mail, electronic forums, bulletin boards, instant messaging and other forms of computer-based communication. There are both advantages and disadvantages to online distance learning.
There are benefits in using online distance learning environments. Online education is available all the time and anywhere. However, there are drawbacks for some learners. The online learner only has the written text and no other face to face cues. This may confuse the learner and cause misunderstanding. While distance learning allows for openness, it is also cumbersome it is done by e-mail messages and writing and therefore may take more time than face –to-face learning.
Why online distance learning and why now? Online distance learning meets the needs for an over-increasing population of students who cannot or prefer not to participate in traditional classroom setting.
These learners include those unable to attend traditional classes due to COVID 19 pandemic, who cannot find a particular class at a chosen institution, who live in remote locations, who work full- time and can only study at or after work, and those who simply prefer to learn independently.
The minimum requirement for students to participate in an online course is access to a computer, and the motivation to succeed in a non-traditional classroom. Online classes provide and excellent method of course delivery unbound by time or location, allowing for accessibility to instruction at anytime from anywhere.Learners find the online environment a convenient way to fit education into their busy lives. The ability to access a course from any computer with internet access, 24 hours a day, seven days a week is tremendous for many students.

SECTION C: COMPREHENSION (10 marks)
Read the following passage and answer the questions thatfollow.
Drugs are double edged swords. They hill and kill depending on how they are used. In most rural areas in Cameroon, more and more people are resorting to auto medication because civil servants who eager to improve their financial situation, and young unemployed people who eager to earn a living, are opening patent drugstores or passing through villages with baskets of full pills. Very few users, educated or not, stop to ask themselves if the drugs they are taking is appropriate for their health.
A couple of years ago, a lady named Miss Gin offered a bottle of drink to her friend Miss Belo. Miss Belo had just bought three capsules of Metronidazole, which she swallowed down with the beer. Hours later at home, she started vomiting. Suspecting that she had been poisoned, she told her relatives what had happened before being rushed to the hospital.
At the hospital, she told the doctor what happened earlier that day. Realizing her error, the doctor explained to her that beer and Metronidazole mix at all. It was the reaction that had caused the vomiting. An antidote was prescribed and she was taken home.
When she got home, her jubilant relatives had just returned from Miss Gin house where they had smashed and destroyed her property, only to be told that the vomiting was due to drug reaction. A long lasting friendship was destroyed because of ignorance.
Information on how these substances can be if not handled by competent health care officials or drug specialists are rare. Most of the drugs that circulate in rural areas and big town through hawkers come from illegal sources and are not usually kept under the right conditions. Pharmacists insist that the trademarks or the countries of origin are not guarantees of the quality, because this can be pirated and take drugs package.
In Bamenda, efforts to prosecute the patent medicine stores ended with a court case that was quickly dismissed because the patent medicine store pay taxes into national coffers. Health authorities are constantly leading a war against these illegal operators, because the consequences of this kind of drug abuse should never be taken slightly.

Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow.
An English language teacher meets a student on the bilingualism day and have the following dialogue.
Good morning Sir.
Good morning young man. How are you today?
I am doing great. Thank you Sir.
Where are you off to?
I am going to the stadium to watch a football match.
I beg your pardon I!! I am surprised at your response. Isn’t today the national bilingualism day? Weren’t you supposed to be in school with your mates to celebrate this day?
Of course Sir. But I am not interested in this issue. I don’t know what bilingualism has brought to this country, and of which we can be proud.
There you go again!!! You keep on getting me astonished. Bilingualism is a vector of progress and development.
Really!!!
Yes of course. Bilingualism is extremely beneficial both for individuals and the state. Are you impressed by the bilingualism of mister Peter ESSOKA, Charles MESSANGA NYAMDING, Charles NDONGO, professor Maurice KAMTO, minister ISSA TCHIROMA Bakary…?
From all indications they are models to be followed. I am impressed by their outstanding bilingualism.
In that case, bear in mind that bilingualism facilitates communication. Let’s suppose you get to the market wishing to buy a pair of shoes and you notice your seller speaks the second language. If you are able to understand the language it will be easy for you to discus and understand each other. Meanwhile if you don’t things will be tough for you. Furthermore, it facilitates the acquisition of a job both at the national and international levels. In fact, during an interview an applicant who shows signs of being bilingual has that as an advantage on their side; and that eases their recruitment. Finally, it is a tool of unity and national integration. Whenever people of different linguistic and cultural backgrounds live together and communicate despite these diversities, it enables others to discover different cultures, and by so doing, promote peaceful coexistence and living togetherness.
Wowwww. I am impressed. From now on, I will endeavor to speak both official languages in Cameroon so as to strengthen my bilingualism. Thanks very much for enlightening me Sir.
You’re welcome my dear. Enjoy your day.
Thank you Sir.

SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION
Read the text carefully and answer the questions below it.
It is no longer a secret to anybody that indiscipline prevails in College and high schools especially those in urban centres. The situation has been preoccupying the minds of teachers, parents and government authorities. The effects of this indiscipline are drug abuse, vandalism, moral depravity and alarming falling standards.
Discipline can be defined as training, especially of mind character, to produce self-control, habits of obedience etc. each College has an administrative staff comprising, senior discipline masters, wardens and boarding masters who are specifically charged with the maintenance of order and discipline. Yet the rate of juvenile delinquency in our College is alarming.
Many people think indiscipline is a device to repress those who try to go against the rules and regulations. This explains why most discipline masters simply look for recalcitrant students and mete out punishment as provided for in College and regulations. The risk of this repressive approach to discipline is that it does not only create in students a sentiment of fear, hostility or rebellion against College authorities, but also imposes a forceful discipline on students. Some take advantage of any free occasion to disguise and express their anger to College authorities.
Poor working conditions of teachers and students are likely to provoke discontent and disorder. For example, the uncontrolled enrolment of children in class, the poor programming of subjects in a school day, the lack of didactic materials, the poor location of some College which are often near markets, football fields, bars etc.
The incompetence and irresponsibility of some teachers is also a source of indiscipline amongst students. Some teachers do not take enough pains to prepare their lesson notes in order to render the subject captivating and interesting to students. This sometimes leads the teacher to make some monumental errors that expose him/her. Some parents are also to blame for indiscipline of their children…Most of them does not perform their role as initial teachers of their very children. Abandoned to themselves, these children are free to do whatever they like. Because of their social status, certain parents even go as making their children believe that they cannot be punished.
Some “parallel schools” hold in corridors and recreational grounds. In such schools, some licentious students mislead their friends who have good upbringing. Under such circumstances, principals of institutions of learning should revise their strategy and consider discipline and good conduct as an indispensable component of objectives assigned to their schools. Children have to be helped in a teaching and learning process.

SECTION C: READING COMPREHENSION
Read the text carefully and answer the questions below it.
It is well known that each and every human being has freedoms without which he or she has no concrete existence. This requires for the state, not only to recognize rights, but also to protect them by the use of laws and law enforcement services like administrative authorities, the police etc.
The rights we have today have gone through many processes. At the beginning, humans were to exercise their rights without the intervention of public authorities, who had to refrain from any action that may compromise the implementation of such rights. We may cite the case of right to property, freedom of speech etc… At this point, we talked of the first generation human rights. Being unable to implement these rights themselves, humans had to seek the intervention of the state to protect them. Then, those of the second generation were born. They consisted for humans to stand for their rights, but with the help of the government which protects them safely, and provide sanctions where necessary. For instance, citizens have freedom of association. But this can only be done after a prior authorization of the competent authorities. In addition, they should exercise their rights in conformity with laws and regulations, and public order.
Later on, modern world imperatives made it difficult for humans to have such a relationship with the state. Hence, both the state and the population have the duty to work hand in hand so as to implement and promote some rights. For example, citizens should help the state create more jobs, since the latter is incapable of doing so all alone. Furthermore, both have to protect the environment in order to promote sustainable development for all. These are called third generation human rights, or solidarity human rights.

VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
The government of our country is hosting a campaign to voice our anger against violence against women and children. We have to find ways of making our homes and communities safe for all, especially for women and children.
Violence against women takes many forms – sexual, physical, economic, psychological – but all of these represent a violation of human dignity and human rights and have lasting consequences for both women themselves and for their communities. Genital mutilation for example is a form of physical violence against women that is still common in our country. This is when the genitals of girls or women are mutilated or incised. The aim of this practise in traditional society is to prevent girls from engaging themselves into early sex and avoid promiscuity. However, the consequences are disastrous. Girls or women who have undergone genital mutilation experience or will experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, sexual problems, childbirth complications, depression, etc.
Another violation of women dignity is breast ironing or breast flattening. This is when girls’ breasts are flattened so that they do not grow or stop developing. Objects such are stones, hammers, etc. are used in this process. It is more often when the young girl is entering puberty that her own family, under the misguided intention of protecting her from rape and sexual harassment decide to submit her to such a cruel treatment. Apart from creating severe pain and tissue damage, this practise can create psychological pain because what makes part of the girl’s beauty is removed.
Furthermore, women experience household or domestic violence in our country. It is estimated that more than 50% of women in our country go through violence in their households. Husbands often abuse their wives physically and emotionally by beating them up in front of their children.
Is anything been done in our country to save women from such abuses? Are the authors of these violent acts aware of the inhuman nature of their actions? The government and international organizations should take immediate actions to stop these practices. There should be a very severe legislation to punish the authors of those acts. Nongovernmental organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch should keep on campaigning locally to help change the lives of thousands of women.
